ASHEBORO - Elmer S. Hutchins Jr. died Tuesday, June 24, 2014, in Asheboro.

Mr. Hutchins was born on Oct. 13, 1924, in Charleston, S.C., and has been a resident of Randolph County since March 1976. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a retired U.S. Navy Veteran having served as an enlisted man, warrant officer and commissioned officer. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Charlotte, N.C., on July 21, 1941, at the age of 16. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and the Vietnam era. He was decorated for both wartime and peacetime service.

After retirement in 1967 he worked for the Navy Personnel R & D Center in Washington, D.C., as a Systems Analyst until 1976. During this time he was published, on many occasions, in the scientific and technical literature. He achieved the status of Senior Systems and Management Analyst, GS-13. From 1976 to 1989 Mr. Hutchins was employed by the N.C. State Employment Security Commission as a Rural Manpower Representative and Employment Interviewer. He retired from State service on March 31, 1989. In his retirement years Mr. Hutchins devoted much time to writing both prose and verse and was published in a number of periodicals.

Mr. Hutchins' was married to Helen Norris Hutchins, who preceded him in death on May 12, 2008, after a marriage of more than 62 years. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Duffy of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; his brother, Mr. Robert C. Hutchins of Charleston, S.C.; and his grandson, Gary Hutchins Jr. of Asheboro, N.C.

He is survived by his two daughters, Marilyn R. Hutchins of Asheboro and Cheryl F. Albus of St. Michaels, Md.; two sons, Gary W. Hutchins of Asheboro and Gregory Hutchins of Matthews, N.C; three granddaughters and one grandson; in addition, there are nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hutchins was a member of the American Legion (Dixon Post #45), the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), The Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and the American Veterans (AMVETS Post #905).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro, N.C.

There will be a church service Sunday, June 29, 2014, at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Asheboro, N.C.
