Ashburton Webster, the only son of the late Colonel Fletcher Webster and Caroline S. Webster, and the grandson and last male descendant of Daniel Webster, died yesterday morning, at his temporary residence in this city. His disease was consumption, following on a cold contracted at the burning of his country residence, "Webster Place," at Marshfield, Mass., a year ago. Mr. Webster was a resident of Boston, but came to New York for medical treatment last November, and was put under the care of Drs. Austin Flint and Fordyce Barker.
He was born in Boston on December 7, 1847, and entered the U.S. navy as a midshipman at fifteen. In 1867 he was graduated from the Annapolis national academy. A year later he resigned his position in the navy in consequence of the loss of the upper joints of three fingers of his right hand. He then went to live at Webster Place, which he had inherited from his grandfather. Then he began the study of law, and after several years practice in Massachusetts retired from his professional labors.
Col. Fletcher Webster, his father, who had been secretary of legation under Caleb Cushing when the latter was minister to China organized the "Webster regiment" in Massachusetts during the civil war, and was killed fighting at the head of it during Gen. Banks' retreat up the valley of the Shenandoah. He was Daniel Webster's elder son, and his younger brother Edward died of a fever in the Mexican war. - N.Y. World.
