Michael was the son of Marguertie "Margaret" (nee Kennelly) and John Cornelius Casey. He was about 18 years old when he arrived in the United States from Ireland. On November 24, 1886 he married Mary Hickey (of County Kerry, Ireland) in Kansas City, Missouri. Their children were William (died young), Margaret Elizabeth, Mary Agnes, John Joseph, and James Stephen. Michael was a mounted policeman in Kansas City, Missouri. He was widowed in March of 1897 when Mary died with acute appendicitus; only a few months after the birth of their son James.

Michael second married Margaret T. Green on September 18, 1906 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Michael died at home, 4109 Genessee, at age 72 of a cerebral hemorrhage.
