Obituary found in the San Antonio Express, 1 May 1935
Charles F.A. Hummel, 80, life-long resident of San Antonio, died in a hospital Tuesday. He was taken there for a surgical operation Monday, although he had been ill for some time.
For about 30 years prior to his retirement five years ago, he was connected with the city government, having held the offices of auditor and treasurer during the administrations of a number of mayors.
For many years he was a member of the firm of Charles Hummel and Son, remembered by old timers as the pioneer gun and ammunition store of this section. It was founded by his father, Charles Hummel. The concern also made guns, and many fine firing pieces were turned out by it, some of which still are treasured by pioneer families.
He was president of the German-English School Ex-Students' Association, comprised of San Antonians who attended early day schools here. Hummel was educated here as a youth, but later studied in Switzerland during 1873-74. He was a honorary member of the San Antonio Casino Club and served as president of the old German Casino Club, one of the first social organizations.
The funeral will be held Wednesday from Hummel's home, 309 King William Street, where he had lived for more than 50 years. The home was built by his late father.
Survivors are three daughters, {_}, and one son {_}
Hummel took an active interest in all early-day social and civic affairs. He was a member of the volunteer fire department, first with the Turner Hook and Ladder Company and later with the Mission Hose Company.
He was a leader in the San Antonio Schuetzen Verinm being one of those who participated in the meetings at the Powder House hill. The shooting hall was at the Ohnesorge Place at East Commerce and Pine Streets and he was one of the best shots of the teams.
He was a prime mover in the grand State shoot and celebration held best in 1890. He also was a member of the Casino bowling team that won the grand prize in a competition remembered by the early citizens.
