Born on February 27, 1919 in Yonkers, N.Y. he was the son of Russian parents, Harry and Ida Allar. He was predeceased by his 6 siblings. He received his graduate and Master's Degree from Fordham School of Pharmacy and Columbia University. He served in WWII as a medic for the 84th Division and was injured in Germany after the Battle of the Bulge. He returned home and met his wife, Ruth "Penny" Lewine, and was married for 62 years when she predeceased him in 2010. Sam had a successful career at Novartis Pharmaceuticals. He was deeply involved in volunteerism, establishing food pantries, homeless shelters, and interfaith groups.
