Douglas County Centennial. She is 78 year old Eva Lane (Mr. Douglas) Waite, of Roseburg, sponsored by Umpqua Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Waite is the only surviving grandchild of General Lane. On her mother's side, she is the granddaughter of Charles Drain, Sr., once president of the Territorial Legislature and founder of the town of Drain [Douglas Co., Oregon]. She is the daughter of Simon R. Lane and his wife, Catherine Ann Drain. A teacher for many years in schools throughout the county, she was married in 1899 to Douglas Waite, then county school superintendent. Mrs. Waite once taught at Umpqua Academy at Wilbur [Douglas Co., OR] for a $33 monthly salary. When she retired from teaching, she was principal at Reedsport Grade School. - Mrs. Waite pioneered 4-H Club work in the county and helped organize PTA and Junior Red Cross groups. Her daughter, Mrs. Walter M. Bain, of Illinois, was once president of the League of Women Voters.
