Frederick was graduated from J. College (probably Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA) in 1836. He was then graduated from Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA (later called Pittsburgh Theological Seminary) in 1837. He was ordained to Presbyterian ministry on June 9, 1840 by the Presbytery of Richland.
He pastored Presbyterian congregations in Ohio 1840-54. He then pastored a Presbyterian Church in Iowa City 1854-59. After than he served another (name unknown) in Iowa 1860-61. He then served at these other Presbyterian churches: Washington & Crawfordsville, Iowa (1863-69), Aledo, Illinois (1869-73), West Liberty, Iowa (1873-79), Colfax, Iowa (1880-85), Earlham, Iowa (1886-89), Maynard, Iowa (1890), Colfax again (1891), and then he retired in 1891. In 1895 he moved to Aledo, Illinois.
