Edith J. Austin-Bright, 71, of Folkston, passed away Wednesday, February 24, at Southeast Georgia Healthcare System Camden Campus, following a lengthy illness.

She was born October 22, 1944 to the late Maybell Vernon-Nelson and John W. Austin in Folkston.

She was educated in Bethune School in Charlton County and worked many years at The Cleaners in Jacksonville. She later took on domestic positions in the homes of several local families.

Edith was a member of Pinckney Chapel United Methodist Church in Folkston, where she belonged for many years and remained until her demise under the leadership of Rev. Eddie Conaway.

When her health was good, Edith enjoyed attending church and singing in the choir. She was most fond of her dog, Smokey, who has already sensed her absence.

Not only will she be missed by her pet Smokey, but most definitely by her companion, Willie Hobbs, her children, grandchildren, siblings and countless other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by both parents, Maybell Vernon-Nelson and John W. Austin; a sister, Equilla A. Green; and her great-granddaughter, Anaya Nixon.

She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons, Harry Lee Vernon, of Folkston, and Rufus Blake, Jr., of Jacksonville; four daughters, Shirley (Richard) Nixon, of Folkston, Ruby (Anthony) Chavis, of Jacksonville, Ella Bright, of Jacksonville, and Patricia Bright, of Folkston; three sisters, Joan (Barry) Jennings, and Vivian A. (Robert) Taylor, both of Jacksonville, and Vianna Austin, of Folkston; two brothers, Terry and Nathaniel (Althea) Austin, both of St. Marys; one uncle, Sammy A. Mays, of Palatka; a devoted companion, Willie Hobbs, of Folkston; special friends, Marie Young, Sylvia Green, Jeanette Riddle and Emma Brown; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.

Funeral services were held at House of Faith Holiness Church Saturday, February 27. Interment was in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Final arrangement entrusted to Royal Funeral Home, Inc., Jesup.
