Isaac was born the oldest child of Jacob and Hannah Kirk, Friends (belonging to the Uwchlan Monthly Meeting, Chester County, PA. The family removed to York County in 1771. Jacob died in 1782. Isaac became a surveyor and lived in Newberry Township, near Lewisberry, PA. His first wife, Martha Garretson, whom he married in 1878, died shortly after the birth of their first son, Jacob, in 1789. Sometime after that, he married Martha's first cousin, Jane Garretson, and had 8 more children. After Jane's death, he married Ann Shuman/Sherman Harmon, widow of Samuel Harmon. (He had been legal guardian of some of Ann's children.) With Ann, he had three more children. Along with Elisha Hammond and Hugh Foster, he became involved with the Sunday School movement and eventually was involved in the founding of the Lewisberry Methodist Church. Well loved and respected, Isaac was often asked by his neighbors to witness wills, in addition to the trust of guardianship mentioned above.
