Carlton L. Schaffner, 93, of Slaton, passed away Friday, Feb. 19, 2016. A family visitation was held from 6-7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 22, at Englunds. Services were Tuesday Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. in Slaton’s Grace Lutheran Church. Interment followed in Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. Carlton was born Feb. 9, 1923, in DeWitt County, to Charles and Ida (Mueller) Schaffner. He moved with his family to Wilson Community and graduated from Wilson ISD. Carlton married Evelyn Elsie Brieger on Thursday, Aug. 24, 1944, in Wilson’s St. John Lutheran Church. Evelyn preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 2008, after 64 years of marriage. They were a cotton farming family and moved to the Woodrow Community in 1956 and continued in agriculture until retiring. Carlton served on a variety of boards: Cooper ISD Board of Trustees, Adult Leader of the Lubbock County 4-H Clubs. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and all outdoor activities.
Carlton was a life member of Grace Lutheran Church. His survivors include four sons, Mike and Betty of Brady, Ronnie and Beverly of Lubbock, Gary and Deniece of Slaton and Dale and Sharla of Lubbock; a sister, Laurine (Keeton) McGee of Lubbock; along with seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family wants to express their appreciation to Carlton’s caregiver, Deidra Tyler. The family suggests memorials be made to the Grace Lutheran Church, 840 West Jean Street, Slaton, TX 79364.
