The son of Caleb & Evelyn M. (Godfrey) Beales, in 1860 he was a teacher living at York Springs, Latimore Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in West Chester, Chester County, June 19, 1861, mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 as a private with Co. K, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry), and honorably discharged with his company June 13, 1864. He also enlisted as a substitute and mustered into federal service March 1, 1865, as a private with the 149th Pennsylvania Infantry in an unlettered company limited to guard duty and accompanying draftees to the front. He honorably discharged May 5, 1865.

He married Sarah C. "Sallie" Naylor December 18, 1866, in Huntington Township, Adams County, and fathered Phoebe Jane (b. ?), Mary Ellen (b. @1868 - "blind and demented"), Annie E. (b. @1873), Susan Godfrey (b. ?), Cyrus William (b. 12/16/77), Georgia E. (b. 05/03/80), and Emma M. (b. 04/30/82). He became a judge after the war and in 1890 still lived in Huntington Township. Death came from a lung ailment age 49-9-5.
