April 22, 1924 — September 10, 2009
Born and raised in Seattle, Rita graduated from Garfield High School in 1941 at age 17. She then attended a vocational school and worked as a seamstress. Soon after, she went to work as a riveter for Boeing during World War II. Her family functioned as a mini Jewish USO, with Jewish servicemen frequently invited to their home. Rita's two younger sisters married servicemen. Rita held off, and married at age 24 to Milton Halperin of Portland. They had two children. Later, she worked for Berenson Hardware and the Portland Civic Theatre. She was widowed in July 1971. Rita married Jim Durkheimer in April 1974. They were married almost 35 years until his death in March 2008. Happily married, she joined in his love of boating and international travel. Rita volunteered as a bookkeeper for the Albertina Kerr Centers and through Temple Beth Israel, she worked in the kitchen of Loaves & Fishes. Rita's interests included the theatre, "pops" concerts, opera, books, crossword puzzles, sewing, knitting, gourmet cooking for friends, boating, international travel and time spent at the beach. Rita Durkheimer is survived by her children, Bruce Halperin and Liz (Marcie) Halperin; and by Jim Durkheimer 's children, Jim Maer, Anne Gunderson and John Durkheimer and their families. She is also survived by her sister, Sylvia Sutton of Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers, she requested donations be made to either the Jewish Family & Child Service or Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc. A family service has been held. The family deeply appreciates the care and respect given by the Terwilliger Plaza staff during Rita's and Jim's final years.
