Janice Mae (Petersen) Herink was born to Henry and Frances (Sperl) Petersen on April 29, 1929, in Stanton, NE. Janice grew up in rural Stanton and graduated from Stanton High School in 1946. She attended Midland College in Fremont and graduated with her teaching degree. Janice accepted a teaching position with Leigh Community Schools where she taught third and fourth grades for three years. It was during this time that she met her husband, Eugene “Gene” Herink.

Janice and Gene were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Leigh, NE on September 20, 1952. Together they raised five children: Richard, Jennie, Russell, Jackie and Julie. Janice and Gene lived in Banbury, England for the first two years of their marriage while Gene was in the U.S. Air Force. They returned to Leigh after Gene was discharged from the service and began farming southeast of Leigh.

They lived on the family farm for 34 years until moving to Leigh in 1988. Janice moved to Prairie Village Retirement Center in Columbus in 2014. She was a resident at Brookestone Acres since September 2015.

Janice was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and an excellent role model for her children and grandchildren. She truly lived her life devoted to faith, family and friends. Janice was also actively involved in her church and community throughout her life. She was a member of St. Mary’s Altar Society and sang in the church choir for many years. She was a member of the Sucha Post 302 American Legion Auxiliary, a founding member of the Keynoters singing group and served on the Leigh Community School Board for many years. After moving to Leigh, Janice attended daily mass and this became an important part of her life. She served on the Leigh Town Board for several years, and worked when needed at the Leigh Public Library, and as a receptionist in the village office and at Leigh Elementary School. Janice enjoyed spending time with her family and having coffee and lunch with her many friends in Leigh and Stanton. Her hobbies included travelling, shopping, reading, baking and quilting.
