Pauline Layton Barton was born on April 13, 1923 in Hollister, Missouri, the daughter of Ben C. Layton and Rose V. (Kaneaster) Layton. She attended Hollister Elementary School and graduated from Hollister High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Southwest Missouri State and her Master’s degree from Drury College. She started her teaching career in Hollister and then taught at Branson High School for 33 years. Pauline also taught at School of the Ozarks and Elder Hostel. She helped many dropouts earn their GED. Because of her exemplary teaching career, Pauline received many awards including the Golden Apple and the Lifetime Teacher Award. Pauline married Ben Barton on December 22, 1945 in Hollister, Missouri. They built a beautiful life together and were blessed with two sons. Pauline was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Branson. She was very active on church committees and teaching Sunday School at her church. Pauline had an unbelievable ability to remember names and past experiences. She could not only recognize and name past students but could name their brothers and sisters. Going to the grocery store was a social event! She was a beautiful and kind woman with many stories and wisdom to share. Pauline entered into rest at the age of 92 on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Point Lookout Nursing & Rehab in Hollister. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben & Rosa Layton; her husband, Ben Barton; brothers, Vernon Layton, Lee Layton and Harold Layton and sisters, Mildred Davidson and Lucille Layton. Pauline is survived by her sons, Ben L. (Gail) Barton of Byron, IL and John P. (Malinda) Barton of Lincoln, NE; five granddaughters, Julie (Stephan) Tran, Jan (Robert) Baker, Jen (Brent) Baker, Jessica (Jon) Jackson and Ashley (Brett) Bales; and twelve great grandchildren of which the last grandson was born on January 31, 2016 – the same day Pauline passed away. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 6, 2016 beginning with visitation at 10:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Branson and funeral services following at 11:00 A.M. in the church. Pastor Thomas Willcox will officiate. Burial will be in Whorton Cemetery in Hollister. Arrangements are under the direction of Snapp-Bearden Funeral Home and Crematory, Branson.
