He was born June 6, 1937, in Chillicothe, Missouri, to Merrill and Jeanette (Morris) Condra, and grew up on the family farm at Numa, Iowa. Condra graduated in 1955 from nearby Centerville High School, where he was center on the football team. He studied engineering at Iowa State University while in ROTC. In 1959, Condra received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Besides two stints of active duty, he served in the Reserves for nearly a decade, attaining the rank of captain
A committed Evangelical Christian, Condra helped found Cedar Valley Bible Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1965; followed by Springfield Bible Church in 1974, which he established with several other local men. His work experiences gave him a taste for international travel, which he continued into his early seventies. Condra’s interests included managing his boyhood farm, running, and Cardinals baseball.
Condra is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anne; his son, James J. ; four grandchildren, ; a first cousin, Mary ; an aunt, Mary Lou ; and two uncles, John and James . He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Thaddeus.
