Watson was born in Ohio, the oldest son of George and Tabitha Sims Flowers. They lived in Springfield Township, Muskingum County, Ohio where George was a farmer. They moved to Sangamon County Illinois by June 16, 1860 where George continued to farm. Watson married Elisabeth McLean in Sangamon County on May 2, 1869. They lived in Curran, IL until sometime before 1880 when they relocated to nearby Loami. Watson and Elisabeth had at least four children: Oliver, Bertha, Guy and Norman. By 1910 Watson was widowed and still living in Loami. Watson was a blacksmith for most of his adult life, but began to farm by 1910.
