Daughter of James & Julia (McCombs) McCaig

Obituary provided by Find A Grave contributor Cheryl White: Centralia Journal, Friday, Dec. 4, 1936, page 1: Ella Gertrude McCaig was born September 24, 1891. She was the daughter of james and Julia Combs McCaig. She passed away at her home south of Centralia, November 28, 1936, making her age 45 years, 2 months and 4 days. The Centralia community was her home from the date of birth to the date of death with the exception of fourteen years which were lived in or near Manhattan, Kansas. Her common school education was followed by graduation from the Centralia high school in 1911. Another date of significance, and one to be cherished, was that of August 11, 1907. For it was then at the age of sixteen that she united with the church, the First Congregational church, under the pastorate of Rev. Fred E. hall. She was united in marriage with Fred Ice on February 19, 1919. The children which have come to this home are two: Violetta Ethel and Merlin Fred. It was in 1922 that Manhattan became the home and where they lived until the spring of 1936 when our Centralia community welcomed them back. Much of hope and happy expectation attended this return to the surroundings of her childhood and youth, fraility of health made its final stab and a new home where all is well was attained. Mrs. Ice was a loving mother and wife, living her life in true devotion to her family. She was a dear sister always with a kind word for those around her. She leaves to mourn her departure, besides her husband, daughter and son, four brothers and two sisters: Andy of Philadelphia, Penn.; Roy, Nora Newman and Laura Yarger all of Centralia; Albert of Topeka, Kans.; and Claude of Osage City, Kans. There are also nieces, nephews and other relatives beside a host of friends. The funeral was held at the Congregational church, Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. T.K. Bosworth, the pastor. A quartet, L.D. Richardson, H.F. Hightower, W.H. Snavely, George Young, with Miss Eileen McGhee at the piano, sang "Some Sweet Day," "Beautiful Land," and "Going Home." The pallbearers were Raymond Blair, Raymond Colwell, Fred McGhee, Marvain Murphy, Bermin DeBord and Wm. Armstrong. Interment in the Centralia cemetery. Card of Thanks. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to all who were so kind at the time of the death of our loved one. Fred Ice and Children,
