NO HEADSTONE FOUND∼H.T. Christmus was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He moved to Leesville, Texas for a while and then moved to Montell, TX. He lived in the Montell neighborhood in the northern part of Uvalde County and ran a small grist mill for a living. On Monday morning, November 2, 1885, Henry and his son, John, got into a wagon and started to the Lake Creek neighborhood. After proceeding some distance they met Perry Humphreys, who was on horseback and armed with a Winchester. Young Humphreys commenced cursing the two Christmus men, and the elder replied in very abusive and obscene language. Humphreys drew his Winchester and leaped to the ground. "Hold on," called out Christmus before starting to jump from his wagon. As Christmus straightened up and cleared the wheel, Humphreys threw his gun down on him and shot him through the right breast. The ball entered just below the collar bone, dividing the main artery leading from the heart to the head. With blood spouting from his wound, the elder man sank back and died at the age of 56 years old.Information gathered from the San Antonio Daily Express, Wednesday morning, November 4, 1885.H.T. Christmus was married first to Cynthia Amanda Elizabeth Painter and second marriage to Mary E. Mosley. His burial is unknown.
