Sean Ryan Cortez 31, of Jefferson City, MO formerly of St. Joseph, passed away Friday, February 26, 2016 in Jefferson City, MO. He was born October 17, 1984 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Kelly (Monahan) and Jerry Cortez. He graduated from St. Patrick's Grade School, and Bishop LeBlond High School in 2003 and attended St. Mary's University, Leavenworth, KS with a basketball scholarship. He married Megan Volkerding on June 25, 2011 and they have two children John Wheeler Cortez, and Sophia Kathleen Cortez. He had worked at Applebees, and at Lincoln University. He was an All State and All City Basketball player and a All City football player for Bishop LeBlond High School, he also played tennis, he loved all sports especially Notre Dame Football. Sean had an infectious smile, and was the type of person who never knew a stranger, he always had a positive attitude and words of encouragement, which made him great to be around. He loved music but most especially he loved being a father, and looked forward to Sunday family dinners. Sean will be sadly missed by his many friends and family. He was a former member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, St. Joseph, Missouri and was a member of and St. Peters Catholic Church, Jefferson City, MO. Sean was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Nadine Cortez, maternal grandparents, Babs & Tom Monahan, and aunt, Lupe Cortez. Survivors include wife, Megan Cortez, son, John and daughter Sophia of the home, parents, Jerry and Kelly Cortez, of St. Joseph, MO, two brothers, Robert Cortez (Brooke), and Marc Cortez (Patrick) of St. Joseph, MO, and sister, Kelsey (Tyler) Tietz of St. Robert, MO, paternal grandfather, John Cortez of St. Joseph, MO, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at 10:00 am at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Father Eric Schneider, Father Richard Rocha con-Celebrants. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the St. Patrick Catholic Church, with the Rosary to be recited at 6:00 pm, Wednesday at the St. Patrick Catholic Church. The Interment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Sean Cortez memorial fund in care of the Rupp Funeral Home.
