Florence was the youngest of her father's 7 children and her mother's 5. She had 2 older half-sisters, 3 sisters and a brother. They lived on farms in Shelby County, Iowa.

She had a daughter by a short early marriage and then married Ed Nelson 28 May 1905. To this union five children were born including a set of twins. The family farmed in Shelby County, then Codington County, South Dakota, Pottawattamie County, Iowa and back to Shelby.

In 1937, the family moved to Shasta County, CA because of Florence's health. She had contracted Leukemia and was ill for 15 years.

She was a member of the Church of Christ at Redline, Iowa.
