Wed to Ella L. Porter. A farmer that joined the Confederate forces at Louisa Courthouse 2 May 1861, he was mustered in 20 days later at Harper's Ferry. On April 26, 1862, he was elected Second Lieutenant of Company D - 13th Virginia Infantry. He spent some of 1862 in a hospital in Charlottesville. He was captured at Winchester on 19 September 1864 and held at Fort Delaware. He took the oath and was released 25 May 1865. The War was over. He was declared eligible to hold office in 1875 and was elected Clerk of the County Court, after being the able assistant for many a year.
