Kurt Karl Wilbert Hackbarth, beloved dad, grandpa and great-grandpa, devoted husband to the late Mildred, passed away Friday, February 26, 2016 with family by his side.

Kurt was born August 25, 1921, at the home of his parents, Herbert and Ella Hackbarth, on the family farm in the Town of Scott, Lincoln County.

Kurt married Mildred Storm - who had grown up in the neighboring town of Berlin - on November 9, 1941. Their marriage lasted 72 years, and was blessed with two children, Karl and Julie.

After working as a young man on the farm and for the Page Milk Company in Merrill, Kurt began a career in carpentry, working for various construction companies in the central Wisconsin area. He was a member of the local carpenters union in Merrill, and served a 2 year term as president of that union, and another 2 year term as recording secretary. His most memorable projects were working as superintendent of construction for Riverview Towers in Wausau and the high school in Medford.

While living in Merrill, Kurt and Mildred were members of St. John's Lutheran Church, where Kurt served several terms as elder, trustee and member of the finance committee, ushers club and choir. Kurt and Mildred also traveled to both coasts when their son served in the military and to several countries in Europe when their son-in-law was stationed in Germany.

In retirement, Kurt and Mildred moved back to the family farm in the Town of Scott. During this time, Kurt learned to play the concertina, playing in a concertina club and also in area nursing homes. He also took a part-time job driving a school bus, had his own woodworking shop, and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer. Retirement also left more time for Sheephead with friends and family. In the 1990s Kurt and Mildred sold the farm and moved back to Merrill, and later to Schofield, where they joined Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church.
