Gideon Cole was born in Farmington, Hartford County, CT to John and Elizabeth Henderson Cole. The family soon moved the short distance to Kensington, Hartford County, CT. Gideon grew up in Kensington and enlisted in the army for the Revolutionary War on July 10, 1776. He was in Col. Wyllys' Regiment and was taken sick in Stamford, CT in November 1776 and was discharged in December 1776.
On September 25, 1777, Gideon married his 3rd cousin, once removed, Chloe Beckley (1756-1818) a daughter of Josiah and Anna Hart Beckley of Wethersfield, Hartford County, CT. Gideon and Chloe moved to Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY. about 1795 and were listed there in the 1820 US Census. They had 14 children, some who died young and others who moved west. They are both buried in Prattsburgh Pioneer Cemetery in Prattsburgh, NY, near some of their children. There are gravestones in this cemetery for both Gideon and Chloe. Gideon Cole is also listed on the Revolutionary War Soldiers Honor Roll on the Prattsburgh, NY town green.
Now the mystery....
There also is a military style gravestone for Gideon in the John and Elizabeth Henderson Cole family plot at Blue Hills (South) Cemetery in Kensington, CT. His gravestone is next to his brother Elijah, also a soldier in the Revolutionary War. For now, we can assume that family descendants placed the stone in the Blue Hills Cemetery at Kensington as a memorial, even though he was actually buried in Prattsburgh, NY.
