Ila Kathryn Newman passed away Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at the age of 92.
She was born April 25, 1923, in a small farmhouse near Merna, to Murray and Jennie (Tinius) Bailey. She grew up with her seven brothers and sisters and lived her entire life in Custer County. She attended school in Berwyn until her family moved to a farm in the Westerville area. The family was saddened by the death of her mother in 1937. Kathryn attended and graduated from Westerville High School in 1941 and moved with her father and sister to Ansley in 1943.
She married Donald Newman March 12, 1946. To this union were born two sons, Daniel and Gary. The family lived in Berwyn for seven years before moving to a farm near Westerville. They moved to Ansley in 1957.
Kathryn had a children's day care for many years and enjoyed the many families that passed through their home. Her husband, Donald passed away Nov. 10, 1996. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier that year.
Kathryn remained in Ansley until 2010. She then moved to Off Broadway Assisted Living in Broken Bow. Kathryn spent the final month of life under the care of her son, Gary and his husband, Dennis in Lincoln.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters and her beloved husband.
She is survived by her children, Daniel and his wife Jaren, and Gary and his husband Dennis; her grandchildren, Brian and his wife Michelle, and Jason and his wife Ariana; great-grandchildren, Shelby and Dalton; and great-great-grandchild, Lane. She will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
At Kathryn's request, we will not gather for a memorial service. She will be quietly laid to rest with Don at a later date by her boys and their families.
In lieu of flowers or memorial gifts she requested that we continue to love and care for one another in the way she has done for all of us for most of our lives. Please take time to share a meal with family and friends or reach out a helping hand to someone who is struggling with life and needs a safe haven. After you shed a tear of sorrow, do something that would make her smile and laugh.
