CPO Louge Gunn, U.S. Navy, Ret., 65, entered into eternal rest on February 21, 2016 at Sentara Leigh Hospital after complications in his battle against lung cancer. He was born and raised in Portsmouth, VA. As a young man, he played the drums in the marching bands at S.H. Clarke Junior High School and at I.C. Norcom High School. Louge enlisted in the United States Navy in 1972, where he served admirably for 21 years. He is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, where he earned several medals, including National Defense Service Medal, Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star. After retiring from the Navy in 1993, Louge attended Norfolk State University obtaining both a Bachelors and Masters of Social Work. It was with his education and training in social work that he would begin a second career providing counseling and mental health services for veterans while working for the Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. After retiring in 2009, he continued his passion of working with veterans through service organizations particularly the American Legion, Post 190 and Chapter 21 of Disabled American Veterans where he served as Commander. Louge was also a member of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the Norfolk State University Alumni Association. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Gunn, his brother Clarence Cartwright and his son, Seaman Cherone L. Gunn, who was killed aboard the U.S.S. Cole on October 12, 2000 at the age of 22. Louge is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mona; four sons, Keith Faulks (Eundene), Anton Gunn (Tiffany), Jamal Gunn and Jason Gunn (Michelle); three grandchildren, Ashley Gunn, Keiniysa Faulks and Lennox Gunn; mother, Evelyn Cartwright Gunn; his brothers Elge Gunn (Diane) and Lewis "Lucky" Gunn; uncle Ray Oakley (Margie); and a host of in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. Louge's success in life can be directly attributed to his passion and commitment in serving other people. He served as a mentor, advocate and counselor for hundreds of veterans as they transitioned out of active duty service. Louge would always be willing to give his last to help friends and family members succeed in life. Long known for his sense of humor and unique ability to make any event a good time, Louge would spare no expense to make sure people had fun in his presence. Louge was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed traveling with his wife. They vacationed and spent time with family and friends all over the United States and the Caribbean. Louge also had a special passion for playing Pinochle with the Tidewater Knucks Pinochle Club and the Young Guns Pinochle Club.
