After graduation from Alva High School in 1933 Dixie then attended Florida State College for Women and earned an A. B. degree. She then earned Master’s degrees in Education and Spanish from FSU. She worked for the Florida Public schools and then for the Department of State in Washington, DC. She visited and resided in fifty-nine foreign countries. In 23 years she worked in Central and South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. She was wed to Julius Carter in 1942 but they divorced in 1948. She authored several textbooks in English and Spanish. She retired from the State Department in 1972.
