JANET R. BRAGG

Maine Sunday Telegram (Portland, ME) — Sunday, February 18, 1996
Janet R. Bragg, 83, of Main Street, a former longtime town dispatcher, died Saturday in a Yarmouth nursing home after a brief illness.

She was born in Cumberland, a daughter of Fred and Rachel Dolloff Collins. She attended Cumberland schools and was a 1930 graduate of Greely Institute.

Mrs. Bragg was employed from 1930-1944 as an operator with the Cumberland Office of New England Telephone.

Later, when her daughter had grown, Mrs. Bragg became the dispatcher for the Cumberland and North Yarmouth Fire Departments, retiring in 1982 after 19 years. She was Cumberland's first fulltime dispatcher.

Her daughter, Rachel B. Macgowan of Cumberland Center, recalled her mother's home ''radio room,'' where she dispatched fire and rescue crews 24 hours a day.

''She took four hours off on Fridays. Other than that, she was on around the clock,'' her daughter said.

Mrs. Bragg's husband, the late Edward E. Bragg, worked as a volunteer with the town's rescue squad. She continued to work as a dispatcher after his death in 1973.

Mrs. Bragg was born in her family homestead, built in the 1850s. The antique farmhouse remains in the family, and is now the home of her daughter's family. ''We're now at the fifth generation living here,'' she said.

Mrs. Bragg's grandfather, Oliver Collins, was the town's first road commissioner. Always interested in town matters, Mrs. Bragg had a collection of annual town reports dating back to her own parents' days.

''She was very proud of her roots. She was a Yankee, and she took an active interest in the politics and everything about Cumberland,'' her daughter said.

For several years, Mrs. Bragg was a local Girl Scout leader.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Carroll M. (Rachel B.) Macgowan Jr. of Cumberland Center; two sisters, Elizabeth Savage of Hollis and Joan C. Dixon of Gorham; and three grandchildren, Alexandra R. Macgowan, Carroll M. Macgowan III, and Victoria Ellen Macgowan.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cumberland Congregational Church, 285 Main St., Cumberland with the Rev. Dana W. Douglass officiating. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth. Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, 37 Portland St., Yarmouth.
