While residing in Berks County, Pennsylvania, Peter Troutman enlisted in Maxatawny Township, and served in the summer of 1776, two months as private in Captain Paul Grosscup's company, Colonel Balzar Gheer's Pennsylvnia regiment. He served in the fall of 1776, two months as orderly sergeant in Captain Philip Martz's company, Colonel Gheer's regiment, and was in the battle when General Mercer was killed. He served in the fall of 1777, two months in Captain Peter Spangler's Pennsylvania company. He served in the fall of 1778, two months in Captain Jacob Ladich's company, Colonel Samuel Ely's regiment.
