Melissa was born 9 July 1867 in York Township, Van Wert County, Ohio, the fourth of ten children of Henry Melcher and Sophrona Root. Her parents resided there a short time. Melissa's birth was the sixth to be registered in that County, dated 31 March 1868.

Melissa's siblings were Catherine Elizabeth, William, John Root, Daniel A., Clara Ethel, Alice Frances, Warren Morris, an unknown sibling, and Chauncey Oren Melcher.

Melissa married Charles Henry Clark 21 February 1887 in Platte, Charles Mix, South Dakota. It is believed that Charles was born 17 March 1856 in Quincy, Michigan. Charles was a farmer, also worked in maintenance for various railroads.

Melissa died 11 December 1889 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa. Her death was from paralysis following the birth of her son Lloyd; she was ill about a week.

Following Melissa's death, her husband Charles moved to Tennessee.

Charles died 7 April 1935 in Amadel, Rutherford, Tennessee. Charles is buried in Pilot Mountain Cemetery, Pilot Mountain, Morgan, Tennessee (Find-A-Grave Memorial #158335625).
