Born in Chicago, Ill., in 1904, he graduated with an engineering degree from MIT where he was active in collegiate sports and became a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and Brookline Fraternal Lodge. While attending summer school at the University of Colorado at Boulder, he met Helen Reed whom he courted and married. Initially they made their home in Southern California. The couple had two children and moved to Palo Alto in 1944.
The couple founded Cole Manufacturing Co. in the late 1940s, starting in their garage. The business grew and became incorporated as Cole Rubber and Plastics, specializing in molded and extruded mechanical rubber products. By 1962, their son had joined the family business that was now established in Sunnyvale.
He was an innovator and contributed to the early electronics, semiconductor and aerospace industries.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed ham radio, boating, photography and was an avid golfer until his early 90s. He was a practicing Christian Scientist. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Helen Cole of Palo Alto; son, Prentiss Cole Jr. (1933) and his wife Lee Cole of Los Altos; and four grandchildren.
