John is a son of Henry Finn, who was born near the boarder of County Queens and Tipperary, Ireland. His mother was Henry's first wife, Elizabeth. She died when John was about 19 and his step mother was Mary McIntyre of Liverpool, England.

It is supposed that John Basil Finn is one "John Finn", born about 1845, 21 years of age, who arrived 26 March 1866 aboard the ship Kangaroo at the Port of New York, New York. His ethnicity is described as British (English) and port of departure was Liverpool, England, Great Britain.

Little is known of him until a family record, based on a letter written by his wife, Minerva Jane Blunk Finn, to their son, Isaac William Finn surfaces containing a birth date of John Basil. His birth place is based on his California Death Certificate.

He married (1) Minerva Jane Blunk, 21 September 1880 at Elk City, Montgomery, Kansas. They had 4 known children; Harry Seth, 1881-1881; Howard Daniel 1882-1888; Mary Rose, 1885-after 1900; and Isaac William 1886-1976. John and Minerva Jane separated prior to March 1892. She remarried [Hall] and died January 1948 in Washington County, Oklahoma.

Note: Minerva was 18 and John 35 in 1880; he listed his age as 28, [which was not correct] - there is the possibility that he had been previously married.

John Married (2) Flora Lynch, 25 March 1892 at Benton County, Arkansas. It is believed that an infant daughter was born and died later that year and is the "baby sister" mentioned in the obituary of one of the twin daughters born to his first wife, Minerva Jane Blunk. Minerva had remarried John G. Ashbrook the same year John Finn married Flora' and later lost Mintie Samantha Ashbrook, who was buried at White Oak Cemetery, "near her baby sister and brother[s]". This fact was recorded in Mintie's obituary.

John Finn and Flora had moved to Willard, Box Elder, Utah, where she died the following year at just 19 years of age. She was buried at the Willard Precinct Cemetery.

Five months later, John then married (3) Minnie Mira Lowe, 21 October 1893 at Ogden, Weber, Utah. They had 4 known children; Della Ivy 1894-1944; Walter Henry, 1895-1961; John Lowe, 1896-1952 and Daniel Lowe, 1897-1902. Minnie Mira died April 1897 at Willard, Box Elder, Utah, and was buried there, along with their 5 year old son, Daniel.

Sometime after 1900, John had married (4) Michigan born "Mary E.", who was about 23, and they were living at Willard, along with John's children, Isaac W. (17), Della Ivy (7), John Lowe (5), Walter Henry (3) and Daniel C. (2).

By 1902, little Daniel had died and by 1907, a newborn daughter of John and his 4th wife, Mrs. Mary E. Finn, had also died and both children were buried at Willard.

John, along with wife, Mary E. were still living at Willard in 1920. His son, John Lowe Finn, was residing with them, being about 23 years old.

What became of Mrs. Mary E. Finn is not known by this researcher; but by 16 June 1916, John had married (5) Isabelle "Belle" Elizabeth Godley, the widow of Frank Doyle Kirkbride. They were residing at Willard in 1930 as husband and wife.

His wife, at the time of his death, was named "Belle" [Isabelle Godley].

His son, John Lowe Finn of Harbor City, California signed the death certificate. John Lowe Finn was John Basil Finn's youngest surviving son by Minnie Mira Lowe of Willard, Utah.

Information published in Utah Since State - Historical and Biographical. Volume II is as follows:

WILLARD UTAH JUDGE, Judge Finn was engaged in railroad building for many years before locating in Utah but since his arrival in this state has devoted his attention to fruit growing, in which he has made a profound success. He has demonstrated the possibilities for the growing of many kinds of fruit in this district and has always employed the most progressive and scientific methods in the care of his orchards ad the smaller fruit. He was one of the organizers of the Willard Fruit Growers' Association and for many yeas served as its secretary and treasurer.

Judge Finn has also filled many offices of honor and trust of a public nature. For two terms he was a member of the city council of Willard and he has been deputy county assessor. He is now the judge of the police court and he has always taken a deep interest in public affairs and is ready at all times to serve the welfare and upbuilding of the community and the interests of the people of this district.

Kindly and generous and possessed of a knowledge of the world gained through extensive travel, John B. Finn is one of the cultured and worthy citizens of the state, and Willard is to be congratulated that he has chosen to make his home within her borders. His work as judge of the court is of great value in suppressing waywardness and crime among the youthful, he making it his aim to call forth and stimulate the better impulses of the young and point them to higher ideals of citizenship and of manhood.

Married between 1900 and 1920 (4) "Mary E. unknown" - solid dates are not documented of this union; it is based on the following records: John appears on the 1920 Willard Census with wife, "Mary E.", age 43, born in Michigan, her father being born in England, her mother born in New Jersey. Birth year would have been about 1857, and her other data also would not cause confusion with Mary Rose, John's daughter. Also confirming a 4th wife named Mary, is a death record of a female stillborn daughter buried in the same cemetery lot as Minnie Mira along with John's son, Daniel Lowe Finn. Said unnamed daughter was delivered and buried 15 February 1907 at Willard, a child of "Mary Finn".

Married before 1930 (5) Isabelle "Belle" Godley, widow of Frank D. Kirkbride. They had no children together.

John, Isabelle and at least two of his sons migrated to California. Isabelle died November 1941 in Los Angeles County, California.
