George Paul Carter, Sr.

October 31, 1927 - February 10, 2016

George P. Carter, Sr., of Monmouth, Oregon went home to be with the Lord at age 88 on February 10, 2016. He was born on October 31, 1927 in Newcastle, Nebraska. On December 22, 1948, he married the love of his life, Mary Lou Ward, in Willamina, Oregon. George proudly served our country as a part of the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. Upon retiring from the Air Force, George and wife, Mary Lou Carter, returned home to Oregon where he worked for Camp Adair and Willamina Plywood Mills. George was a skilled woodworker and after retirement enjoyed working in his woodshop. In recent years, he was known as the "Balloon Man" in the Monmouth and Independence area. He loved to bring a smile to the faces of children making balloon animals.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John William and Winifred Carter; infant son, Michael Paul Carter; son, John Wesley Carter; son-in-law, John Hubbard; sisters, Doris Maupin and Marcella Bernier. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Lou of Monmouth; daughter, Paula Jeannette (Henry) Buckland of Christiansburg, VA; son, George P. (Lanita) Carter, Jr. of Independence; and daughter, Mary T. Hubbard of Falls City; brother, Floyd Carter, and sister, Sharon Hansen; 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 17 at 11:00 am at Cornerstone Church of God in Independence. Arrangements made by Crown Memorial Center, Cremation & Burial. Burial will be at the Willamette National Cemetery on Tuesday February 23, 2016.
