Was a farmer with 7 children when recruited to fight on the Confederate side in 1861. In July, 1861 the Second Infantry Regiment of McBride's Seventh Division, Missouri State Guard was formed. Oregon County men made up Companies A, D, F, and G. On August 10, 1861 they fought at the Battle of Wilson's Creek near Springfield, Missouri and were victorious.

Note that W.D. Hollis was listed as being in the MO State Guard, on Roll 184 of Service Records for MO State Guard at National Archives. Further, there is a report of Brig. Gen. J.H. McBride's command in action near Springfield Mo Aug 10, 1861 listing W.D. Hollis as killed. Report marked Camp on Wilson's Creek Aug 10, 1861.

This was one of the first major battles of the Civil War and soldiers did not carry adequate identification. Many were unidentified when buried at the battlefield. Most were later reburied at the Springfield National Cemetery, so he is probably buried there with other Unknowns.
