Obituary Dateline: Richmond, Kentucky

George Walter Applegate, 83, of Richmond, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather went home to be with the Lord on February 12, 2016 after a short illness.

He was born in January, 1933 in Washington, PA. He was a 1952 graduate of Trinity High School where he was class president for 2 years. He was an All Star football player and played starting varsity quarterback 3 of his 4 years in high school. He spent 4 years in the Air Force in the Strategic Air Command. He worked for 39 years for the LectoDryer Corporation, having been transferred from Pittsburgh, PA to Richmond, KY in 1977. George was an avid horseshoe competitor. He won the Kentucky State Horseshoe Championship in 2004, 2005 and 2008, and also won a Doubles Horseshoe Championship in 2009. He also enjoyed golf and shuffleboard. George was a Charter Member and co-founder of the South Hills Assembly of God Church founded in 1965, where he taught Sunday school and was active on the building committee. More recently he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Richmond, where he was an active participant in the Celebrate Recovery program. George was preceded in death by his parents Louise Kopp Applegate and George Lynn Applegate, his wife of 52 years Phyllis Elliott Applegate and a brother David Eugene Applegate.

He is survived by his wife, Francis Kulla Applegate, a son George (Ellen) Elliott-Applegate, father of Ashley Applegate and Collin Applegate (Felicia) father of their 3 daughters: Abigail, Eliana and Shoshana; a daughter, Linda Stewart (Randy) and her 3 children: Brittney Carter (Chris), Dylan McMaine (Jessica), and Mallori McMaine, mother of Sophia; a daughter Laura Applegate and her 2 children: Ciana and Aaron; two sisters: Lorene Applegate Mueller and Judy Applegate Bilak (Mike), an older brother Jack Woods (Geraldine); two step children: Kathy Applegate Barnes (Rick) and David P. Applegate (Debra) along with many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 on Thursday, February 18th at the First Baptist Church in Richmond with the funeral on Friday, February 19th at 11:00 also to be held at the First Baptist Church with the Reverend Bill Fort officiating.

George will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Oldham, Roberts and Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
