HARVEY BARNES DEAD

Another of our fine young men has sacrificed his life to the terrible flu and when the word came the first of the week that Harvey Barnes was dead at his home near North Loup from pneumonia following a few days sickness, it was a great shock to the community. Harvey was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Barnes of Greeley but for many years a resident of Ord. Harvey was born at Three Oaks, Michigan, Dec. 15, 1882, and was a small child when the family came to Ord so he was really a product of this county. He was farming and batching near North Loup. Last fall he was a prominent democrat candidate for treasurer in the primary, educated himself largely through his own efforts and was a fine type of manhood. He was the first [sic] of eleven [sic] children to die. He is survived by his parents and the brothers and sisters.
They are Mrs. Leon Cronk of Greeley, Mrs. Curt Wilson, Mrs. Jim Arnold, Mrs. Wesley Daily all of Ord, Mrs. John Canning of Greeley, Howard and Chester both in the navy, the former at New York and the latter at the Great Lakes, and George, Ellis, Truman and Hershel all at home. Howard was here last night but had but a brief furlough to come home on account of the illness of his brother and was unable to get an extension of time and left this morning to report to his headquarters when the time was up, being unable to wait for the funeral, which was to be held this afternoon if relatives could be here.
Harvey was alone when first taken sick but as soon as possible his mother went to him and the services of a trained nurse were also secured but to no avail.
Harvey was a member of the Methodist church, joining at Ord and later taking his membership to the church at Greeley where he lived for a time.
The remains will be buried in the Ord cemetery according to plans this morning.
