On June 5, 1858, Mustoe Chambers, 9, son of Dr. C.L. Chambers of Tipton, drowned while bathing with four other boys in a pond created by an embankment on the old Lyons Railroad. For some reason his companions failed to give an immediate alarm and he was in the water too long. Efforts to revive him failed. The pond was then partially drained. Heavy rains had plagued the vicinity for weeks.
