Rev Ashbury Caperton McNeer, a well known Methodist minister, died at his home near Alderson, Tuesday about noon, of pneumonia. He had lived in that vicinity for a number of years,.
He was a son of Augustus B and Sara McNeer and was born near Salt Sulphur Springs, Monroe county, January 2, 1845. Reared in the home of God fearing parents he early gave his services to the work of the ministry. In March, 1871, he united with the Baltimore conference, M E Church, South. From that time until March 1906, he served charges in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland, In 1906 failing health forced him to superannuate. From that time until his death he made his home near Alderson.
He was married three times. On October 20, 1874, he married Miss Marietta Virginia Deisher, of Botetourt county, Va. She died on October 5, 1881, leaving one child, Ida Pearl, who followed her mother to her reward in 1888. October 2, 1883 he married Miss Frances R Circle, of Botetourt county, Va. To this union there were born three children, Ella Louis, Rembert D, and Emerald B, all of whom survive. The second wife died May 8, 1898. The third marriage was with Miss Mattie Dorn Nutty, of Rockbridge county, Va, in September 1889. Five children were born to this union, Asbury, Augustus, Marietta E, William Paul, Mattie S and Mary M. Marietta E died November 18, 1905.
Mr McNeer was the oldest of nine children, three brothers and six sisters. These with his aged mother, who is now more than three score and ten, survive.
The funeral services were conducted at the home yesterday by Rev G C Berry, pastor of the Methodist church and the remains will be laid to rest today at Glen Wilton, Va.
