A Remarkable Man, George L. Rappold, Dies At Age 93

George L. Rappold, 93, died Wednesday evening, March 26 in his farm home at Richmond. He was the oldes resident in Richmond township. Born April 29, 1864 in Wiesenbach, Germany, he came to this country when about 18 years of age with an uncle and settled in Helenville. He brought with hin a canary which he kept with him for many years until its death.
He was a farm laborer for 8 years in Jefferson and Rock counties. IN September of 189 he purchased a farm in Richmond which he farmed until he retired a few years ago. On March 30, 1891 he married Barbara Horlacher of Helenville. He was a lover of outdoor life, a keen marksman and noted fisherman. He wore neither specks, hearing aid or false teeth. He was active every day of his life until January 7 of this year when he fell and fractured his left leg. He was hospitalized nearly 6 weeks. Although the break knitted and he was able to return home, his health gradually failed. He was only confined to his bed 10 days before his death due to a slight stroke. When the time came peacefully at 8:20 last Wednesday evening, March 26, his devoted family was at his bedside.
His home was a place of many social gatherings where friends were always welcome. Seventeen years ago on March 30 he and his wife celeberated their 50th wedding anniversary. This March 30, their 67th anniversary, he was laid to rest. He was a charter member of St. Christus Evangelical Lutheran Church of Richmond.
Survivors include his widow; 1 son, Albert of Turtle Lake; 2 daughters, Ella Papcke, Whitewater and Mrs. Pauline Klitzke, Turtle Lake; a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law; 1 granddaughter, Mrs. Bessie Polzin, Harvard and a grand son-in-law; 2 great grandchildren, Christine and Della Polzin of Harvard, Ill.; one brother, John of Richmond; a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives. ONe sister and two brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday from St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Whitewater with burial in Richmond cemetery. Skindingsrude and Lein Funeral home made the arrangements.
