Merle D. Byers, 67, of 456 Old Route 30, McKnightstown, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Sep. 17 at the York Hospital.
Born, Jan. 27, 1939 in Gettysburg, he was the son of Mrs. Margaret (Shelleman) Byers, of Gettysburg, and the late Merle G. Byers..
Byers was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1956-1960. He retired in 2001 after 35 years of services as a traffic line foreman with PennDOT.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, Cashtown Fire Department, Biglerville Legion Post #202, Gettysburg Eagles #1562, VFW Post #15 in Gettysburg, Loyal Order of Moose #1526 in Gettysburg, Adams County Fish and Game, Blue Ridge Sportsmens Association, VFW Post #7343 in Mount Holly Springs, Voiture #731 40&8 in Gettysburg, VFW in Liberty, Pa., VFW in Blossberg, Pa., Deer X-ing Detachment, Inc., Hillside Road and Gun Club, Arnot Sportsmen Club, Shoshonean Rod and Gun Club, Theodore Roosevelt VFW Post #167 and the Masons.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy L. (Keller) Byers; mother, Margaret (Shelleman) Byers; daughter, Donna Claassen of McKnightstown; three sons, Dale Byers of Biglerville, Dave Byers of McKnightstown and Donald Byers of Biglerville; two sisters, Loretta Hoffman of New Oxford and Lavetta "Bunny" Caskey of Gettysburg; eight grandchildren, Cody and Ashley Claassen, Derek, Dwight, Devin, Carrie, Katie and Danielle Byers; and one great grandson, Nathan.
Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Derek, Dwight, Devin and Carrie Byers, and Cody and Ashley Claassen.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sep. 22, 2006 at 10 a.m. at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg with the Rev. Michael E. Allwein officiating. Interment with military honors was in Flohrs Cemetery, McKnightstown. A viewing was held on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
