BROWNWOOD, CHARLENE JOY
July 7,1932 - January 12, 2015

Charlene Joy was born on July 7, 1932 in Burns Kansas and she passed peacefully in her home on January 12, 2015 at the young age of 82. Charlene lived up to her middle name Joy because she spread joy to all who met her, she had a kind-heart and she was a generous, giving soul. She would give a person the shoes off her feet, and she did so without expectation of anything in return. In 1953, Charlene was married to John Bruce Brownwood and they lived for 53 years in West Covina CA before he passed in 2006, and they had seven children. Over the years, she spent countless hours volunteering on the little league baseball fields and in the snack bar. She had a committed relationship to Jesus Christ and she had a strong faith. She constantly prayed for people, and she wanted all to know her love for the Lord in hopes that they would find a relationship with God too. She was involved with her church for over 40 years; attended many bible study groups, took church services into nursing homes to minister to the elderly, played the piano for women's groups, and she and her husband started an Overcomer's Outreach ministry at CCV that lasted for over 15 years. She was an active member of Alanon for a long time and was supportive of her husband who was a sober alcoholic for over 26 years. She also sponsored many children around the world through World Vision.
Charlene had Alzheimer's and Parkinson's for just over two years, and we believe that she is now relieved of all illness and is truly happy, joyous and free. We rejoice in knowing that our loving mom and grandmother is with the Lord and is reunited with her husband and her daughter Jamie Alonzo, along with many other loved ones that have gone before her. Charlene is survived by children Leslie Flood, Jonna (and Roger) Harbert, John Bruce Brownwood Jr., Daniel (and Susan) Brownwood, Juli Smith, and Lari Beth (and Larry) Foster. She also leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and her 23-pound 16 year-old cat. There will be a memorial celebration on 2/6 at 6pm at Christ's Church of the Valley at 1404 W Covina Blvd, San Dimas 91773. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you pay forward a random act of kindness to someone in need.
