Mr. Jack Anderson Loftis, 85, passed away at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Monday, February 8, 2016. He was born in Surry County to the late Robert Houston Loftis and Ethel Geneva Doss Loftis McMillian. Mr. Loftis was a graduate of Mount Airy High School and the National Business College of Roanoke. He proudly served in the U.S. Marines from 1952 until 1954. Mr. Loftis worked as an executive for several textile companies, including Quality Mills, Rocky Mount Undergarment and Perry Manufacturing. After retirement, he began a career in Real Estate Sales, working with Century 21 and was recognized as Surry County Realtor of the year in 2000. He was involved and committed to many organizations in Mount Airy, serving as past President of the Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce, the Surry County Board of Realtors, and the Lions Club, where he was a long time member. He also served on the Surry Arts Council Board of directors. Mr. Loftis served as Mayor of Mount Airy from 2001 until 2009 and was well known for “The Mayor’s Forum” column in the local newspaper; as he wanted the city’s work to be open for all citizens to be informed. During his time as Mayor, he was instrumental in working to have a local highway dedicated as the “Andy Griffith Parkway” and also helping to have the Andy Griffith statute located here. In April 2011, the downtown plaza was named in his honor. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church as a teacher, deacon, choir member, and on many committees. In addition to his parents, Mr. Loftis was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Dottie Moser Loftis; a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Bobbie Loftis; one sister-in-law, Lucy Moser; and one brother-in-law, Don Arnder. Surviving are his children and spouses, Steve and Emily Loftis; Susie and Woody Jordan; Richard and Marti Loftis; and Daniel and Jane Loftis; grandchildren and spouses, Rob and Andria Loftis; Brook and Kelli Jordan; Matthew Jordan; Kathryn Loftis; and Caroline Loftis; one great-grandson, Ethan Jordan; one brother, Dale Loftis and wife Joann; one sister, Wilma Arnder; and many nephews and nieces. He is also survived by a dear uncle, E.J. "June" Loftis, Jr.; one aunt, Lettie Loftis Patterson; and special friend, Mary Good. A celebration of life service will be held at 12:00 PM Friday, February 12, 2016 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Roger Gilbert and Rev. Jay Meadows officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday in the Fireside Room immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Midkiff Cemetery Fund, PO Box 1526; Mt.
