Evaleen “Pat” Towery of Crockett passed away peacefully on Feb. 6, 2015, at the age of 95.
Born in Partridge, Ky., on Sept. 28, 1920, she was the widow of Frank Towery, Sr.
Pat attended elementary and high school at the Junior Order Orphanage in Tiffin, Ohio. She was placed there along with her brothers and sisters after the death of her father during the typhoid fever epidemic in 1923. After graduation, she attended Eastern Kentucky State College. Prior to World War II, Pat worked in the American Red Cross office where she met and married her first husband, Capt. Richard Lawrence Davidson. He was killed near Sainte Mere Eglise, Normandy, during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. Through a mutual friend, she met and married Frank Towery, Sr. on July 19, 1948.
She adored her family, and spoiled her six grandchildren and their friends, all of whom referred to her as “Mimi.” She often hosted staff members from Frontier Camp in Grapeland on weekends, who could count on a warm meal and a place to do their laundry. Childhood friends of the grandchildren still remember playing old board games at Mimi’s house and using her billiards table in the “pool room” to make up variations of the game.
Pat often said that she loved her husband – our beloved “Papa” – “better than peaches.” She enjoyed hosting meals in her home and taking the family out to dinner, always encouraging everyone to order dessert and questioning whether we got enough to eat. She was generous with cash at Christmas and helped put many of the grandkids through college. She often reminded us that “Papa always said, ‘It’s only money.’” It became a running family joke because in fact, no one actually remembers Papa ever saying that. Pat loved wearing bright colors, bright lipstick and bright nail polish to match her sunny disposition. “I’m blessed,” she would say on a near-daily basis, even in her final days at Arbor Hills Memory Care facility in Plano.
Pat was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, served as president of the Woman’s Missionary Union, was a member of the Melody Makers and held various positions on numerous committees. She served as president of the Crockett PTA, was a member of the Crockett Culture Club, the Redbud Garden Club and served several terms as regent of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and was made an honorary regent. Pat also was the state chairman of American Heritage and local national defense chairman of the DAR.
Pat is preceded in death by her parents, Willie Lewis and Ada Lewis Fitzwater; sisters, Irene Reynolds and Willa Mullins; brothers, Edwin Lewis and Quentin Lewis; first husband, Richard Lawrence Davidson and husband, Frank Towery, Sr.
She is survived by son, Frank Towery, Jr. and wife, Rebecca; daughter, Nancy Towery Hanson and husband, Rick; and daughter, Patsy Towery Weinberg and husband, Mike. Also surviving are grandchildren, Carla Towery Villanueva and husband, Brian; April Towery; Emily Hanson Wight; Stephen Hanson; Cassie Weinberg and Olivia Weinberg; great-grandchildren, Ashley Villanueva, Audrey Villanueva, Tyler Villanueva, Jacob Villanueva and Jackson Wight. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016 at the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel in Crockett. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Frontier Camp in Grapeland or First Baptist Church in Crockett.
Visitation will be Monday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
