Esther's mother Nora died with the birth of Esther's infant brother in 1905. Following her mother's death, Ether's father married Josephine Ethel Honnold (1884-1962). Esther had four half-siblings from her Father's second marriage: Elinor Ruth, Mary Helen, Casper Jr., and Cathryn.

Lawrence was born 20 March 1896 in South Bloomingville, Ohio, the son of Joseph Lesley Lehman (1872-1948) and Stella Lorraine Earnhart (1874-1946). He had four siblings: Pearl, Daisy, Flay, and Edgar. Lawrence started out working as a clerk in a drug store, then became a public school teacher.
