He and his wife of 49 years, Peggy, retired to Norman in July of 1998, where he served on the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma University Theatre Guild, and was an active participant in the local Kiwanis International Chapter, as well as the Norman Chamber of Commerce Leaders Plus and Ambassador programs. Dr. Irby was an avid fan of OU football and women's basketball and regularly attended these sports events. His hobbies included playing golf, woodcarving, traveling, reading, crossword puzzles and western movies. He was an active participant in McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church. His greatest love was his family.

Dr. Irby was preceded in death by his parents, J.P. and Lillian Irby, and his sister, Mary Abbott, M.D.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; son, Jay Paul Irby of Louisville, Kentucky, a Clinical Psychologist at Central State Hospital; daughter, Mary Cille Irby of Norman, an elder of the United Methodist Church, chaplain at Norman Regional Hospital and director of the HUB, a holy listening center for children and teens; grandchildren, Emeran and Paul Irby of Louisville, Kentucky; nephew, Keith Abbott and his wife Joan of Norman; niece, Mary Alice Taylor and her husband Joe of Purcell; and grandnephews, grandnieces and cousins.
