When he played football at Norte Dame University in South Bend,Indiana for Knute Rockne from 1922 to 1924, he was on of the "seven mules" which was the offensive line that made the "Four Horsemen" famous.
As head football coach of the "Boilmakers" of Purde University in Indiana from 1930 to 1936 he had a record of (42-13-3). He coached Big Ten Conference co-championship teams in 1931 and 1932. He never had a losing season and lost only nine games to Big Ten foes. He became Athletic Director in 1933. He was forced to step down as football coach in August of 1937 when stricken with a kidney ailment. He remained Athletic Director at Purdue University until his death in 1940.
