QUINCY -- John A. "Herky" Ludwig, 80, of Quincy, died at 6 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at the Illinois Veterans Home.

He was born June 30, 1935, in Quincy, a son of Arnold J. and Agnes Marie Johannes Ludwig. He married Mary E. Juette on Feb. 13, 1960, in Quincy. She preceded him in death Dec. 23, 2013.

Herky was a truck driver for Gem City Distributers. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Japan during the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church.

Herky enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golf. He treasured time spent with his family at the camp in Missouri. From a young age, he was known to be ornery and was given the nickname "Herky" after a cartoon character with similar traits.

He is survived by two sons, Ken Ludwig and his wife, Penny, and Bob Ludwig and his wife, Pam, all of Quincy; four grandchildren, Sarah (Trevor) Lamis of Atlanta, Ga., Andrew (Kathryn) Ludwig of Oregon, Eric East of Canton, Mo., and Cody (Laura) Cook of Quincy; four great-grandchildren, Layla East of Canton, Mo., and Kanon, Kage and Krew Cook of Quincy; and sisters, Juanita "Neetz" (Don) Heckenkamp, Pat Sloan and Sally (Ed) Lillig of Aurora. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

In addition to his wife, Mary, and his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Richard "Dick" Ludwig, and two sisters, Sandy Gallaher and Dorothy Maxwell.

SERVICES: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery.

VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at the funeral home.

MEMORIALS: St. Francis Catholic Church.
