George Richard Mayo

Nashville, TN

Age 69, passed away February 1, 2016, at Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN.

George was the only son of George Joseph Mayo and Frances Margaret Mayo.

George is survived by his wife, Suzanne Damron Mayo; two sons, George Lynn Mayo and his wife, Leslie, and Brett Griffin Mayo and his wife, Rachel; one grandson, Mark Alexander Mayo; three sisters, Peggy Mayo Ray, Margaret Ann Mayo Hunt and Virginia Sue Mayo; three nephews, Scott Hunt, Robert Benjamin Weir and his wife, Amanda, and Harlan Christopher Weir and his fiancée, Callie Moncus; two sisters-in-law, Janis Louise Gates and her husband, Chester, and Nancy Lynn Weir and her husband, Robert; one great niece, Lillian Grace Weir; and one great nephew, Samuel Nevin Weir.

George was born in Nashville, TN and graduated from North Nashville High School. George accomplished several things throughout his high school career, such as: President of the Senior Class, Student Body President his senior year, Co-Captain of the football team, making All-City in football, recipient of the Civitan Medalist Award, voted as "Most Likely To Succeed," and recipient of the Optomist Youth Award. He was President of the Letter Club, was on the student council, was a representative to Boys' State, received the Oil Can Award and was a Hume Award Nominee.

George received a football scholarship to Austin Peay. He graduated from Austin Peay State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in History and a minor in Business Administration, with teaching certification on the secondary level. George and Suzanne were married on June 27, 1968 and remained married for 47 years. George taught Civics and American History for the first few years of married life at Koffman Middle School in Hopkinsville, KY. George and Suzanne first resided in Clarksville, TN.

George gave up his teaching position when he was offered a management position in the transportation industry in Nashville, TN in 1971. He would remain in that industry for many years, lastly, as a Transportation Broker and Partner.

George loved the Lord, his family and his friends. We are comforted in knowing that as followers of Jesus Christ, we are confident we shall one day be reunited in Heaven. In the meantime, may you rest in peace, George R. Mayo.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 5, 2016 from four o'clock until eight o'clock in the evening at Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

The Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, February 6, 2016 at two o'clock in the afternoon at First Baptist Church of Donelson.

Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
