Philander W. Peck was born in the town of Johnstown in 1834, the son of Charles and Phebe (Seley) Peck. He was married to Sybil Plaisted and they had nine children, two daughters and 7 sons. After Sybil's death, he married Mrs. Amy M. Phillips around 1897. She was the widow of Ira Phillips, a well known glove manufacturer of Rockwood. Philander had lived in Johnstown until 1889, when he moved to Stockton, CA. (In the late 1880's he had some business reversals regarding his lumber business and had to declare bankruptcy, that may have been the reason for the move.) He lived in California for about seven years. In 1893 he moved to Rockwood where he made his home until his death.

Philander died at his home in Rockwood. He had been in poor health for the past two years but had been able be about until a short time ago. Death was due to complications brought on by age.

He was a member of the Baptist church. He was also longtime a member of Gloversville lodge. No. 439, F. & A. M. He was survived by his widow, Amy M. Peck; two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Tooker of Williamsport, PA and Mrs. Hattie Truax of CA; five sons, Eugene W., William E., James B. and Bert P. Peck of Gloversville, and Jerome A. Peck of CA. He also leaves several grandchildren. Another son, George Peck, died a few weeks before his father. Interment was mads in the family plot in Prospect Hill.
