Alena B. Nelson, 84, passed away at Marian West Hospital in Santa Maria, CA on August 28, 2003. She was born on May 6, 1919 in Newman Grove, Nebraska.

She lived on the family farm in Newman Grove until her graduation from Newman Grove High School in 1938. After graduation, Alena moved to Stockton, CA, to marry her high school sweetheart, Arthur E. Nelson, former co-owner of the Port Stockton Nursery. During World War II, Alena worked for Western Union in Stockton while Art served in the Army. She later worked as executive secretary at The Stockton Record. After completing her AA degree at Delta Junior College, she began her many years of faithful service to Calvary Baptist Church, now known as The Bridge. She was a devoted church secretary and school librarian, always an active and caring member of Calvary Baptist. Alena loved to read, paint and travel. She also loved to write, keeping many diaries and journals to record her active life. She loved and cared for animals as well, especially her cats.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Arthur E. Nelson. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Rustin Pearson and husband, Howard of Santa Maria; nieces, Suzanne Hajnik and husband, Frank of Santa Maria and Sandra Buchanan, and husband, Rob of Santa Maria and their families; as well as many members of the Nelson family in Stockton. For the past two years, she was a resident of Arbor View Retirement Community in Santa Maria, where she enjoyed a life of loving care among many friends.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. in Evergreen Chapel of Cherokee Memorial Cemetery in Lodi, CA. Arrangements are in the care of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home, 600 E. Stowell Road, Santa Maria. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of your choice.
