The Confederate Pension Application for R. A. Persons, file # 18374, Smith County, Texas, gives the following information.


R. A. (Robert Alexander) Persons was born in Early County, Georgia. He resided in Texas, and in Smith County, since December 1879 (until date of application, 1909).

He enlisted about December 18, 1861 and was discharged December 1862. He re-enlisted in January 1864 and was discharged April 1865. Witness I. W. Orr stated that R. A. Persons was underage at the time of his enlistment and was not subject to re-enlistment when his first enlistment service time expired; that he re-enlisted when he came of age and served until the close of the war, mustering out at Waynesboro, Georgia, in April 1865.
He was a Private, Company E, 31st Regiment, Georgia Infantry, CSA; he stated he was the color bearer of this company.
R. A. Persons died October 29, 1920, in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, at the home of his son-in-law, Ben H. Kelly.
